Basketball and Baseball

In the fall and winter months, students in grades six, seven and eight may join our Boys' or Girls' basketball teams, the CAWS HAWKS. The sixth grade participates at practices and at the two end of season games with the Manchester/Essex grade seven team.  The seventh and eighth grades represent the school in interscholastic competitions in after-school and weekend games.

In the spring months, students in grades six, seven, and eight may participate in our co-ed baseball team.

Participation in the CAWS HAWKS allows the students to learn and improve basketball and baseball fundamentals and skills; be a part of a team sport and represent the Cape Ann Waldorf School in the community. The coaches like to see all the students who are involved in the program to have playing time.

Parents are involved by: attending games; transportation for practices and games; special events such as the Great Barrington trip as chaperones; end of season celebration; and by participating in the alumni games.

Karl Pulkkinen has been Head Coach for the HAWKS girls basketball program since its inception in 1992. He has a long history with the school since he is one of its founding parents, having had two sons graduate from CAWS. He has served on the Board and on various committees in the school as well as taken part in the Holiday Fair and the Shepherd’s Nativity Play.  Karl especially enjoys the teaching aspects of the game of basketball, helping the girls develop both the fundamentals of the sport and a love for the game. Seeing all the girls improve on their individual and team skills and their self-confidence as players is very rewarding to Karl.

Tyler Macdonald is the Head Coach for the HAWKS boys basketball program and is also the Coach for the co-ed baseball team.  Tyler is currently the Physical Education teacher at the Cape Ann Waldorf School for grades one through eight. He is a graduate of the five-year training program in Spacial Dynamics in New York, taught by Jaimen McMillan, founder of the training that began in Germany. Tyler is also enrolled at Salem State College in Salem, MA, where he is studying Physical Education and Coaching.  He graduated from the Cape Ann Waldorf School in 1996 and from Salem High School in 2000.

The basketball program and baseball program each have a minimal fee to cover travel and other expenses.  For the basketball teams, an End of Season Celebration dinner is held at the end of the basketball season to celebrate all of the players’ accomplishments.
